IAOMC: Advanced Myopia & OrthoK Accreditation

The International Academy of Orthokeratology and Myopia Control (IAOMC) provides two distinct pathways for practitioners who are committed to demonstrating their advanced expertise in myopia management and orthokeratology. Both pathways involve rigorous study and a comprehensive examination evaluated by peers. Once certified, practitioners are expected to contribute to the community by educating the public and mentoring newcomers to the field.

International Academy Certification in Myopia Management (IACMM)

The IACMM is designed for practitioners who are already board certified in optometry or ophthalmology. It requires extensive study and training as specified by the IAOMC. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in several key areas, including:

  • Understanding the epidemiology of myopia
  • Recognizing myopia-related pathology
  • Measuring and interpreting axial length data
  • Assessing risk and progression of myopia
  • Designing and presenting a treatment protocol that utilizes all therapeutic options, including orthokeratology

Certification is awarded upon successful completion of a comprehensive written examination.

Fellowship in the International Academy of Orthokeratology and Myopia Control (FIAOMC)

The FIAOMC is a more advanced certification that requires candidates to already hold the IACMM. In addition, candidates must have fitted orthokeratology lenses for at least 100 patients and completed hundreds of hours of study and training specific to advanced orthokeratology. Fellows must demonstrate proficiency in several advanced skills, including:

  • Designing an orthokeratology lens for a complex prescription or cornea
  • Troubleshooting advanced orthokeratology cases
  • Managing advancing myopia that is out of control

The FIAOMC is awarded after the candidate has successfully presented and defended three complex orthokeratology cases, and passed both a written and a two-hour oral examination. The FIAOMC represents the highest standard of knowledge, ethics, and patient care in the field of myopia management.

As of now, there are only 155 practitioners worldwide who have achieved the FIAOMC certification.
